OPEN CALL &JURY - SPRING EXHIBITION 2022

29 November - 19 December 2021From 29 November - 19 December 2022, the Charlottenborg Foundation is accepting submissions for the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition 2022 for the 165th time. 
This year, the jury spans both collective and individual practices, and practitioners with a significant international career as well as a proximity to art schools.

OPEN CALL

Between 29 November and 19 December 2021, all artists – regardless of background, education and nationality – can submit works to the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition 2022. The Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition is one of the most important open, censored exhibitions in northern Europe, and has been held annually at Charlottenborg in Copenhagen since 1857. Today, the exhibition serves as an important event for international visual arts, architecture and handicrafts/design.

JURY 2022

In 2022, the jury consists of artist duo Hesselholdt and Mejlvang, visual artist David Risley, architect Peter Bertram,textile artist Grethe Wittrock and visual artist Sophie Suaning.

This year's jury has been chosen in order to create a versatile basis for the exhibition's censorship, ranging widely from members with solid international experience, to artists with a proximity to the artistic educations, with Sophie Suaning, who graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 2021. After the last physical censorship round, Hesselholdt and Mejlvang will curate the exhibition.

SOLO AWARD IN COLLABORATION WITH POLITIKENS FORHAL

The spring exhibition's solo award rewards overall artistic quality and at the same time relevance. The prize will be awarded in collaboration with Politiken's concourse and presented on the opening night, after which it will result in a solo exhibition in Politikens Forhal in 2023. 

With the Solo Prize comes DKK 10,000 for the realisation of the project. 

The focus of the new venture is to support the growth layer through a series of tailor-made collaborations, where the artists will have the opportunity to further develop their exhibition practice in close cooperation with the institutions and become part of a solid artistic program, where they can create a solo presentation in a professional setting through a concentrated effort.

DEEP FOREST ART LAND AWARD

With the Deep Forest Art Land award, the winner gets the opportunity to develop his artistic practice, as well as create a solo presentation in a professional setting. The new collaboration will help further strengthen Deep Forest Art Land and the Charlottenborg Foundation as a platform and resource for the artistic growth layer that can lift talent from the growth layer into a broader context, both geographically and institutionally.

TALENT AWARD

The talent award goes to an artist who in his practice both exhibits an experimental approach and possesses an interesting development potential, for the jury. The winner of the Talent Prize will be honoured with DKK 10,000 and will have the opportunity, in collaboration with Deep Forest Art Land and the Charlottenborg Foundation, to create a site-specific work for the platform following a residency period in the immediate area. The work will be presented in autumn 20212 and the exhibition will be publicly available until late summer 2022.

SPRING EXHIBITION

Over the years, the Spring Exhibition has been the first significant step for many young artists in the path to a professional career, while the exhibition has often presented new works of more established names. Throughout the long history of the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition, artists who are today internationally recognized, debuted or presented works at the exhibition, including Per Kirkeby, Alvar Alto, Jørn Utzon, Olafur Eliasson, Jasmina Cibic, Jeppe Hein, benandsebastian, Anne Haaning and many more.

EXHIBITION SPACE

Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition is held every year at Kunsthal Charlottenborg in Copenhagen, which is one of the largest exhibition venues for contemporary art in Northern Europe. The art hall is housed in a Dutch Baroque palace, an extension to the historic Charlottenborg Castle, which also houses the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition 2022 will be shown in the period 6 February to 13 March 2021.

The exhibition is organized by the Charlottenborg Foundation and its Board of Directors, consisting of visual artist John Kørner, architect Peter Møller Rasmussen,photographer Søren Rønholt, jewelleryartist Annette Dam,visualartist Christina Augustesen and visual artist Ann Sophie von Bülow.

THE JURY 2022

In 2022, the jury will consist of artist duo Hesselholdt & Mejlvang,artist Ursula Reuter Christiansen,architect Peter Bertram,textileartist Grethe Wittrock and artist Sophie Suaning. This year's jury was invited based on creating a diverse jury spanning solid national and international experience, as well as a proximity to art schools with 2021 graduate from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Sophie Suaning. After the last and physical round of censorship, artist duo Hesselholdt &Mejlvang will curate the exhibition. 

THE SOLO AWARD IN COLLABORATION WITH POLITIKENS FORHAL

The Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition's solo award recognises overall artistic quality and relevance, and is granted on the opening night of the exhibition in collaboration with Politikens Forhal. The Solo Award is accompanied by an invitation to produce a solo exhibition at Politikens Forhal in 2023 and DKK 15,000 for the realisation of the show.

DEEP FOREST ART LAND AWARD
The winner of the Deep Forest Art Land Award will have the opportunity to create a solo presentation at Skovsnogen, Kibæk, Denmark. The new collaboration aims to further strengthen Deep Forest Art Land and the Charlottenborg Foundation as a platform and resource for emerging artist, reaching new audiences both geographically and institutionally. The work will be revealed in the fall of 2022.

TALENT AWARD
The Talent Award recognizes an artist who demonstrates an experimental artistic approach and possesses an interesting potential for developing their artistic practice according to the jury. The winner of the Talent Award is honoured with 10,000 DKK

LOCATION

The Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition is held every year at Kunsthal Charlottenborg in Copenhagen, one of the largest spaces for contemporary art in Northern Europe. The Dutch inspired baroque palace housing the exhibition halls is an addition to the historical Charlottenborg Palace, also housing The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Since 1883 contemporary art has been presented in the unique exhibition building. The Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition 2021 will be open from 6 February – 13 March 2022.
